Fellows’ Terms and Conditions 2018-2019

Fellows will be entitled to the following items:
  • A monthly stipend in the amount of USD 6,000 for every month the Fellow remains in residence at the IIAS. No income tax is deducted from the Fellow’s stipend in Israel, however it is still subject to tax laws in the Fellow’s home country.

Fellows from overseas are further entitled to the following:

  • Travel expenses from the location of residence abroad to accommodation in Jerusalem, as approved by the Administrative Director, Iris Avivi. Also included are travel expenses for the Fellow’s spouse/partner and any children under the age of 18, provided that the Fellow’s visitors remain in Israel for at least seven months out of the 10-month residency.
  • Shipping costs of research aids, such as books and computers, for up to a total of USD 500 each way for Fellows arriving from the USA and USD 300 for Fellows arriving from Europe and Asia.
  • An apartment in Jerusalem, modestly furnished and free of charge for the duration of the residency. Apartment size and location are determined according to availability, while consideration is given to the Fellow’s family size and individual needs. The Fellow is responsible for paying the monthly costs of utilities of approximately NIS 2000, and a one-time NIS 600 cleaning fee will be charged at the end of residency. The Fellow is requested to sign a rental agreement upon arrival, which will be countersigned by the Administrative Director, Iris Avivi. Extensions for apartment use can be provided at an extra cost, and should be discussed with the Administrative Director.

The admission and stay in Israel of IIAS Fellows will follow the Israeli law according to the rules of the local authority.

The Fellow will participate fully in the work of their respective Research Group for the entire duration of the group's residency at the Institute. Unjustified late arrivals or early departures will result in corresponding stipend deductions.
The Fellow is required to spend their working day at the Institute in order to facilitate group meetings and seminars. They are expected to be present at the IIAS five days a week for a minimum of eight hours per day.
The Fellow is required to relinquish all teaching and administrative responsibilities outside of the Institute and suspend all external employment and/or special projects for the duration of their fellowship. However, the Fellow may advise doctoral students and post-doctoral scholars on research that relates to the group's project. Meetings should take place on IIAS premises.
Work activity
The Fellow will report to the IIAS Director about his/her research activity, presenting a final report by two weeks after the end of residency.
The academic results of the Fellowship remain the full property of the Fellow. However, all publications and presentation resulting from the supported research are required to be branded “Supported by the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies”. The Fellow will send to IIAS a copy of these publications for the IIAS’s archives, and temporary affiliation to the IIAS will be included in lectures, seminars, and conferences, in reference to the academic activities carried out as an IIAS Fellow.
When presenting a talk at another institute while in residence at the IIAS, the Fellow is asked to mention their current status as IIAS Resident Fellows. PowerPoint presentations should prominently feature the IIAS logo, which can be downloaded from the IIAS website here: http://ias.huji.ac.il/sites/default/files/IIAS_logo.jpg
The Fellow is provided an office, a computer, administrative services and IT support at the IIAS. Additionally, the Fellow will be able to access all the Hebrew University libraries with an ID card provided by the IIAS staff for borrowing books.
Leave of absence
The Fellow is responsible for organizing leaves of absence from their home university/research institute. The IIAS administration should be notified—six months prior to the Research Group residency—that the leave of absence has been approved. Written confirmation must be forwarded to IIAS Research Group Coordinator.
The Fellow is entitled to leaves of absence for up to twenty working days during the 10-month research group residency. These days include absences for personal and medical reasons as well as absences to fulfill academic/professional obligations (e.g. participation in international conferences). All expenses for these external academic/professional obligations are the financial responsibility of the Fellow and will not be reimbursed.
Any absence from work must be reported as soon as possible. Approval for this absence will be granted on an individual basis. Unapproved absences will be reflected in a deduction of the monthly stipend. The IIAS Administrative Director should be informed two weeks in advance of any absence lasting more than three days.
External presentations
The Fellow is expected to be a visible participant in presentations offered at national and international institutes during their residency. Any presentations given by the Fellow at institutes other than the IIAS should be reported to the Research Group Initiator. The report should include the title of the presentation, the date and venue of the presentation, together with an abstract of about 150 words, which is submitted to the IIAS Director.
